The Blues have emerged as favourites to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder after he rejected a new deal but face stiff competition from the La Liga giants
Manchester City may need to slug it out with the two Spanish giants for Bundesliga star Ilkay Gundogan.
The moneybags Premier League club have emerged as favourites to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder after he rejected a new contract.
Gundogan has just a year left on his current deal, Dortmund will be forced to sell in the summer and an outline offer from the Blues is already on the table.
But even though the Germany international would choose City over rivals Arsenal - who also retain an interest - it is thought both Real Madrid and Barcelona are now circling, after the news he would leave at the end of the season.
That means City will be forced to pay up for the player, even though he will be entering the final season of his contract.

But with incoming manager Pep Guardiola identifying him as a high priority when he arrives in the summer, and with Gundogan himself interested in working with the current Bayern Munich boss, City are still confident of landing the player — even if they have to pay over the odds
