Yanga will not be carried away - Coach

YOUNG Africans will not get carried away by the mammoth 5-1 first leg win over Comoro side Ngaya Club de Mde in their African Champions League preliminary round tie, assistant coach Juma Mwambusi has said.

The Mainland envoys in the continental premium club competition returned home yesterday from Moroni, where they made the light of the Comoro minnows over the weekend. Goals from Justin Zullu, Simon Msuva, Obrey Chirwa, Amissi Tambwe and Thaban Kamusoko apiece wrapped a massive win for George Lwandamina’s side at the Stade de Moroni.
The Tanzanian champions now have a comfortable lead to take into what appears to be a mere formality return fixture next weekend at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. However, Mwambusi insisted that they will not rest on their first leg success and promised a solid performance in the reverse game.
“We have won the first leg and there is another match to play, it is important that we get the right preparations so that we get the job done and get into the next round,” Mwambusi told reporters at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).
“It is not over yet, we beat them at home and they can come with a different approach. What we need is to make sure we play well and defend our lead, we have one leg in the next round, but we must finish off the job,” he added. Hundreds of jubilant Young Africans supporters turned at the JNIA yesterday afternoon to welcome their team back home.
The Mainland champions will face the winner of the tie between Zambia’s Zanaco and APR of Rwanda. The first leg played in Lusaka ended in a barren draw. The first round fixtures will be played on the weekends of March 11-13 and 17-19.

Stars coach plots CHAN success

NATIONAL soccer team, Taifa Stars interim head coach Salum Mayanga has presented a six-month programme, which seeks to prepare the side for the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Information and Communication Officer, Alfred Lucas, said yesterday in Dar es Salaam that the programme provided by the former Mtibwa Sugar coach also comprises the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 Cameroon qualifiers.
“Mayanga has presented his programme ready for the CHAN campaign, whose finals will be hosted in Kenya and we have started working on it,” said Lucas. Lucas said that the six-month programme presented to the federation by coach Mayanga, comprises the team’s training camps and friendly matches ahead of the CHAN tournament, which strictly involve players featuring in local leagues. He also said that the former Mtibwa Sugar coach is tasked to recommend on whether the trial matches will be played at home or outside the country.
“We have received the six-month programme from Coach Mayanga, but where the trial matches should take place that will depends on the coach’s recommendations to the federation,” Lucas said.
Mayanga, who replaced Charles Boniface Mkwasa after the latter’s contract ended is facing a daunting task to revive Taifa Stars which have found themselves rocked in lowest FIFA ranking positions in recent months.
Taifa Stars have dropped two spots to 158th in the latest world rankings, released by FIFA in Zurich, Switzerland. Following a period of inactivity the Taifa Stars have found themselves occupying 49th spot on the continent out of 55 nations.
The Tanzanian outfit collected 152 points, a drop of two points from the previous 154. Taifa Stars recorded their worst position at the end of the year in a decade after they finished the year 2016 in 156th position.
Their poor ranking owed to Taifa Stars’ inability to post positive results in AFCON and World Cup qualifiers. And, the task ahead for Mayanga is monumental and his programme should help turn around the team’s fortunes.
Taifa Stars will kick off its campaign for the 2018 CHAN finals against Rwanda ‘Amavubi’ between July 14 and 16 at home and the return leg match will be held in Kigali between July 21 and 23 this year. The winner of the two legged match will cruise into the third round of the qualifiers, whereby it will face the winner of the match between Uganda and South Sudan or Somalia, who are scheduled to play in the preliminary round.
Tanzania under Brazilian tactician Marcio Maximo managed to qualify for the CHAN finals for the first time in 2009 in Ivory Coast.
Unfortunately, the team was eliminated in the preliminary stage. In the AFCON 2019 qualifiers, Tanzania has been pooled in group L alongside Uganda, Cape Verde and Lesotho. Winners from each group of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers will book a ticket for the AFCON finals to be hosted in Cameroon, who are the tournament defending champions.
Cameroon beat Egypt ‘Pharaohs’ 2-0 in this year’s finals held in Gabon to be crowned the new continental champions. The last time Tanzania qualified for the AFCON finals was in 1980 in the finals held in Nigeria.

Celebrating ‘First Computer Day’ and maverick Ecuadorian President Ibarra

TODAY, February 15, is the ‘World’s First Computer Day,’ a.k.a. ‘ENIaC Day.’ The day is celebrated in commemoration of the world’s first general-purpose electronic computer, developed at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering of the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in the United States of America.
It was on February 10, 2011 when the City of Philadelphia officially declared that February 15, 2011 – the 65th anniversary of the unveiling of ENIaC, the acronym for ‘Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer – would thenceforth be known as ENIaC Day to celebrate dedication of Penn’s historic computer.
Seeking to blind us with science, technicians tell us that ENIaC ‘was amongst the earliest electronic general-purpose computers made. It was Turing-complete, digital – and could solve a large class of numerical problems through reprogramming…’ But, perhaps not many readers would know that ‘ENIaC was originally designed and primarily used to calculate artillery firing tables for the US Army’s Ballistic Research Laboratory – and that its first programmes included a study of the feasibility of the thermonuclear weapon!’ [See Moye, William T (January 1996); ‘ENIAC: The Army-Sponsored Revolution;’ and Dalakov, Georgi, ‘ENIAC: History of Computers,’ retrieved on May 23, 2016]. When ENIaC was formally dedicated at Penn University on February 15, 1946, it was heralded as a ‘Giant Brain’ by the press, we are told.
More of the technical abracadabra, you say? Well… ‘It had a speed in the order of one thousand times faster than that of electro-mechanical machines! ‘This computational power – coupled with general-purpose programmability – excited scientists and industrialists alike. The combination of speed and programmability allowed for thousands more calculations for problems, as ENIaC calculated in 30 seconds a trajectory that took humans 20 hours to calculate: a 2,400x increase in speed! Get that? I don’t… Anyway, if you still hanker for more of that technical mumbo- jumbo then, for Gawd’s sake, browse for bags-full of it on the ubiquitous Internet – thanks to the ENIaC in the first place! Let’s move on to lighter stuff that took place on today’s date! Let’s see… Here we have one which borders on the tragiccomic.
Historians tell us that an Ecuadoran politician, José María Velasco Ibarra (born March 19, 1893; perished March 30, 1979) was elected five times as President of Ecuador: 1934-1935; 1944-1947; 1952-1956; 1960- 1961, and 1968-1972.
But only once (1952-1956) did he complete the constitutional mandate of four years at State House! What determination; what resilience… Ibarra did not complete the four other Presidential tenures because he was ousted out of power through military coup’s d’etat! His first Presidency began on September 1, 1934.
But he was ousted by the Military in August 1935! Ibarra was named Supreme Chief of the Republic on the back of the May 28, 1944 ‘Glorious Revolution,’ and was later named ‘Constitutional President’ by the Constituent Assembly. However, he was again deposed by the Military in August 1947, when ‘three Defense Ministers perpetuated the coup against Ibarra, including Minister Mancheno who later succeeded him! He begun a third Presidential term on September 1, 1952 on winning that year’s Election – and went on to serve the full term to August 31, 1956!
However, elected President for the fourth time in 1960, he was tossed overboard on November 7, 1961… Finally, ‘our Velasco Ibarra’ won the Presidency for a fifth time in 1968. However, he was deposed in the February 15, 1972 bloodless coup which brought General Guillermo Rodríguez Lara into power.
Analysts say President Ibarra ‘always had a special preoccupation with infrastructure. Many public works – including irrigation canals, roads, highways, bridges, aircraft fields, hospitals, educational infrastructure – were constructed during his Presidencies… In his full term at State House (1952-1956), he saw to the construction of more than 1,359km of roads; 1,057km more were improved; 311 schools were constructed –with another 104 in progress…!’ ‘In total,’ we are told, ‘Velasco Ibarra governed for nearly 13 years in total – making him the longest-serving President in Ecuadorian history…’ Boy!
If he achieved so much in 13 hectic years, imagine how much more he’d have done for his country had he been able to rule uninterrupted for the 20 years of his five Presidencies… Sheesh! Two things worth mentioning here… Reputedly a great, captivating orator, the charismatic Ibarra once said ‘Give me a balcony (from which to campaign) – and I’ll become President!’
Indeed he demonstrated that five times over… But, to me the most poignant thing about the man was when his wife Corina Parral de Velasco Ibarra died after falling off a bus in Buenos Aires where they were exiled. This precipitated Velasco Ibarra’s death. On his return to Ecuador, he said ‘I come to meditate, and to die!’ Indeed, he died in Quito a few days later: March 30, 1979! Tears!

Ike Ugbo struck as Chelsea beat Leicester City to reach The FA Youth Cup semi-finals

Ike Ugbo’s second-half strike proved decisive as Chelsea saw off the challenge of Leicester City to reach The FA Youth Cup semi-finals for an eighth successive season.
The former England Under-17 striker headed in full-back Reece James’ 66th-minute cross in a closely-contested tie at the King Power Stadium.

The sides traded blows from distance in the opening exchanges, Layton Ndukwu and Chelsea captain Mason Mount both missed the target though.
Ugbo forced the first save of the game with a fierce header that Leicester keeper Cameron Yates was equal to.
The home side came agonisingly close from taking the lead in the opening moments of the second half, with Kairo Arlott-Edwards’ effort coming back off a post.
Chelsea upped the ante in response, Ugbo heading wide Callum Hudson-Odoi’s centre.
But the Foxes defence were struggling to cope with Ugbo’s aerial threat and he duly decided the tie midway through the second half – his fourth goal in this season’s FA Youth Cup.

Asamoah Gyan is among the 40 footballers whose hair cuts don't conform to the laws of the UAE where they ply their trade.

The captain of the senior national team of Ghana, Asamoah Gyan is part of a group of 40 players in the United Arab Emirates whose hair styles are deemed ‘unethical’ according to the laws of the land.

The United Arab Emirates Football Association guidelines permits to a certain degree, the kind of haircut a player gets before taking to the field. One of the most significant stories relating to this issue is when Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah was asked by a referee to cut his ‘un-Islamic hairstyle before he was permitted to play.

Asamoah Gyan, captain of the Black Stars has a trademark Mohawk hairstyle where he designs his favourite number 3 on either sides of his head.
The player has had the look during his days in England with Premier League club Sunderland. Gyan has also previously played for Al Ain and Shanghai SIPG with the same look.
Gyan, who is on loan at Arabian Gulf League club Al Ahli is expected to make amends to his haircut as some Islamic teachings ban ‘Qaza’ hairstyles which includes the 31-year-old’s preferred style.
Asamoah Gyan was recently with the Ghana Black Stars team who placed fourth at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Simba, Lyon lock horns in last 16

GIANTS Simba face a banana-skin test as they entertain unpredictable African Lyon in the last 16 tie of Azam Sports Federation Cup (ASFC) round at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam this afternoon.

The draw for the round of 16 of the ASFC produced some exciting all premier league fixtures and this would be fascinating one to watch given recent meetings between the two sides.
The fixture was initially scheduled for March 1, but the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) brought it forward for technical reasons, a move approved by the two clubs
. Simba, who are desperate to return to international football, cannot underestimate the magnitude of today’s fixture and importance of the Federation Cup, which provides one of the two tickets to represent the country in continental competitions.
The Msimbazi Street Reds crashed out at the quarter-final stage last season after crashing 2-1 to Coastal Union, but will be keen to avoid such embarrassment this time around and try to win the competition, whose winner represents the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.
But they will be aware of the kind of opposition they’re up against having already faced African Lyon in the league this season, when the Reds succumbed to their first defeat of the season, losing 1-0. That gives Lyon confidence going into today’s fixture.
A superb defensive performance and well-calculated attacking display saw Lyon seal a memorable win with a last-gasp winner against a formidable Simba side, ending their 13-match unbeaten run. Would the same tactic produce similar result in favour of Lyon or would Fernando Tavares’ side take a different approach? Whatever way they choose, it would need a heroic performance to outsmart Joseph Omog’s demolition gang.
One of Simba’s main undoing this season has been their goal-shy striking force but recently, they appear to have finally found that cutting edge. Two 3-0 league wins over Majimaji and Tanzania Prisons have demonstrated notable improvements in the Reds’ offensive game. Key to Simba’s newly found attacking verve is the return to form of striking duo Ibrahim Ajib and Laudit Mavugo. The two strikers scored a goal apiece in both fixtures and produced overall impressive performances.
Simba have injury concerns with key defenders Method Mwanjali and Abdi Banda unlikely to feature against Lyon, while Ugandan defender Juuko Murshid is yet to return to the club since his participation in the African Cup of Nations finals with Uganda Cranes.
The Federation Cup’s round of 16 matches are set to continue on February 24 when last season’s runners-up Azam will play host to Mtibwa Sugar at Azam Complex in another gripping all-premier league encounter. Elsewhere, Kagera Sugar will welcome Stand United at Kaitaba Stadium in Bukoba.
Two more matches will be played on the day whereas Ndanda FC will visit the Mighty Elephant at the Majimaji Stadium in Ruvuma, whilst Arusha’s Madini FC will be up against JKT Ruvu at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.
Other matches will be played on February 26. Mbeya dwellers will be treated to a mouthwatering derby pitting Mbeya City against their city rivals Prisons. Mwanza residents should also brace for a thrilling derby between Mbao FC and Toto Africans at the CCM Kirumba stadium on the same date.
In the last of the eighth ties, defending champions Yanga will be expected to make an easy work of Kiluvya United when the Premier League leaders face the Dar es Salaam minnows on March 7 at the National Stadium.

Yanga out to hit CAF ground running

MA I N L A N D c h a m p i - ons Young Africans will be targeting to hit the ground running when they face Comoros champions Ngaya de Mde in their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie today in Moroni.
Yanga jetted off yesterday morning to Moroni in time for the first leg clash at the Stade de Moroni. A total of 20 players and eight members of the technical bench plus two officials left ahead of the match.
The club’s General Secretary, Charles Boniface Mkwasa, told journalists on Friday that seven players have not been included in the list of 30-strong contingent to Moroni due to various reasons. Zimbabwean striker Donald Ngoma and defender Vincent Bossou have not been included in the trip to Comoro.

He said Zimbabwean striker, Ngoma and Malimi Busungu will not travel with the team because they are sick, while defender Vincent Andrew is serving three yellow cards suspension picked last year during the CAF Confederation Cup campaign. Togolese central defender, Bossou, holding midfielder, Pat Ngonyani and goalkeeper Beno Kakolanya will also not make the trip and will wait for the return leg encounter.
In Ngoma’s absence, Yanga Head Coach George Lwandamina will look to fellow country-mate youngster Obrey Chirwa who will partner Burundian striker Amissi Tambwe to find the back of the net against the islanders.
In central defence, skipper Nadir Haroub is expected to be restored to partner Kelvin Yondani, while Juma Abdul and Haji Mwinyi will complete the back four to protect goalkeeper Deogratius Munishi. Zimbabwean Thaban Kamusoko and gifted Rwandese Haruna Niyonzima will take control of the midfield.
The Jangwani Street side will target to better their last season performance, where they were eliminated in the second round by Egyptian side Al Ahly 3-2 on aggregate before dropping to the CAF Confederation Cup where they fell short in the group stages finishing fourth in Group B.
Lwandamina’s side will be eyeing nothing but a clear victory against the dark horse to put themselves in a comfortable zone in the return leg match at home. Yanga are scheduled to face their opponents in the return leg match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam two weeks later.
Niyonzima said, “We learnt a lot from last year’s edition of the Champions League. Now we know that it is important for us to start well especially because we are playing away first.”
“We do not know much about the team but we shall be looking to get the best result which is a win and if that does not happen, at least we should get a draw so that we do not have a lot of pressure in the return leg” he said. Yanga were expected to attend light training session yesterday evening at the venue where the match will be played.
Last year, Yanga defeated Cercle de Joachim from Mauritius 3-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round and will be hoping to avoid a shocker in Sunday’s match. Should Yanga progress to the next round, they will face the aggregate winner of another preliminary tie between Rwanda’s APR and Zanaco of Zambia in the first round match in March, this year.
The overall winner of the twolegged match will proceed into the tournament’s group stage.

FC Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano gives exclusive interview to the club's official media outlets

A full length video of the face-to-face will be released on Friday, allowing fans to discover the human side of the man they call 'El Jefecito'
FC Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano opens up about his life both on and off the field in an exclusive interview to the Club’s official media channels that will be released in its entirety on Friday (free registration required).

The 32-year-old Argentine, who has 186 appearances since joining the Catalan club in 2010, has long been one of the team’s leaders in the locker room, along with his friend and compatriot, Leo Messi.
If there were any doubt as to Mascherano’s influence in the blaugrana dressing room, one need look no further than the prologue of his new book, The 15 Rungs of Leadership, in which Messi himself calls Mascherano “a very positive leader.”
“He teaches you many things,” Messi said. “All the time. He’s always thinking of his friends. He’s a fighter. It’s impossible to not follow his lead when you have a captain who is first in effort, who runs more than the rest, and who is the best example of how it should be done.”
The exclusive video interview coincides with Mascherano’s appearance on the cover of Barça Magazine, the bilingual — it is published in Catalan and Spanish only — and bi-monthly publication for Club members.
The magazine’s February issue also includes special reports about the FCB Coaches Academy and six of the women’s team’s longest tenured player, as well as an interview with Hiroshi Mikitani, the Founder and President of Rakuten, the Japanese online retailer that will be FC Barcelona’s main global sponsor beginning next season.

Football transfer rumours: Ronald Koeman to take Barcelona job?

Because Barcelona are so self-effacingly understated, so lovably altruistic, it is impossible to find any pleasure in Tuesday night’s més que un clubbing by Paris Saint-Germain; the football family mourns as one. But as a consequence, and also as a consequence of various other entirely unamusing poor performances, Luís Enrique is under pressure, with most commentators expecting him to lose his job in the close season. So already, rumours abound as to who might succeed him, and that’s Barca for you: firing our fantasy, even in defeat.

Among the candidates is Ronald Koeman, whose lack of qualifying achievement is offset by the fact that he was a good player for them thirty years ago, because, well, them. Also in the running is Jorge Sampaoli, whose terrifying demeanour and fearsome muscle-shirts would at least guarantee maximum effort from the players, while Mauricio Pochettino, Ernesto Valverde and Eusebio Sacristán have also been mentioned. Or, put another way, no one has a scooby, mainly because Barca are just so compellingly gnomic, so romantically romantic.
Elsewhere, Paul Scholes reckons Wayne Rooney will leave Manchester United in the summer; well, Paul Scholes reckons Wayne Rooney will leave Manchester United in the summer if Wayne Rooney’s not playing regularly, so Paul Scholes reckons Wayne Rooney will leave Manchester United in the summer. Of course, that will all change when his pace, consistency, aggression and first touch suddenly return, his inherent Britishness making a red, white and blue regeneration almost inevitable, despite the lack of any corroborating evidence.
Last summer, meanwhile, United failed in a bid to sign Thomas Müller – according to Bayern Munich’s chief financial officer, Jan-Cristian Dreesen; yes, that’s the Jan-Cristian Dreesen. The plan was for Müller to keep Zlatan Ibrahimovic company, hanging about doing nothing for the majority of games, but the sale “was never discussed”, insisted Dreesen. “If a player fits here, we would be stupid to go for the short-term prospect of a record profit only to weaken him,” the various parties told one another via the mediums of telepathy and mime.

Report this adTalking of Zlatan, word is that he is wanted by Aurelio De Laurentiis, the chairman of Napoli. Quite what business it is of his, given he has employed a manager, is still to be established – all the more so given the success and mobility of the club’s current forward line, along with the return to fitness of Arek Milik. But there is, it must be conceded, unarguable logic in a surname that contains a double i.
Across Manchester, City are considering the purchase of Jack Wilshere; we know this because Xavi says that Pep Guardiola says that he’s good when he’s not injured. And Guardiola, genius that he is, is also keen to sort out his doddery defence, so is seeking to buy Thomas Lemar, the Monaco forward. Lemar, who cost £3m in 2015, is now deemed to be worth £30m, thanks to the eight whole goals he has scored so far this season; also interested are Juventus, Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid.
Meanwhile, the talent-spotters at Paris Saint-Germain are at it again. Patrick Kluivert, the club’s director of football, has suggested that he may, at some undefined point in the future, try to sign Lionel Messi. Messi, for his part, has always dreamed of playing against in the big games against Lorient and Rennes, so could well fancy the move.
Talking of big – and its various synonyms such as gigantic, massive, colossal and enormous – John Terryand his big, gigantic, massive, colossal and enormous personality have, unsurprisingly, attracted interest from the equally disproportionate USA, as it seeks to make itself great again. LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls and Orlando City would all like him to join them, but he has opted to stay loyal to Chelsea because that’s just the kind of guy he is.

Real Madrid play highlights of PSG 4-0 Barcelona at the Bernabeu ahead of Champions League match vs Napoli

Those cheeky scamps from the Bernabeu knew the perfect way to get their fans up for the last-16 clash - taking the mick out of Barca

It has been a good week for Real Madrid.
The La Liga giants maintained their lead at the top of their domestic table at the weekend, and on Wednesday they established a 3-1 first leg lead in their Champions League last-16 tie against Napoli.
But for many of their supporters, that wasn't even the best result of the week.

Nope, that honour would go to Barcelona's 4-0 hammering at Paris Saint-Germain the night before.
Barca were torn apart by a rampant PSG, who established a dominant lead in the tie to all-but secure a place in the last eight at the expense of Luis Enrique's side.
And Real wanted to keep the celebrations going ahead of their game, so they played the highlights of Barca's loss on the big screen at the Bernabeu ahead of facing Napoli.
he sight of the goals going in against Barca whipped the Madrid crowd up into a frenzy before the game, and it obviously worked as they went on to win.
Not everyone was as happy to see what Real had done, though.

Man United must battle seven European giants to land £84m goal machine

The Torino star has been in sensational form this season, netting 17 goals in 21 league appearances.
And Transfer Market Web claim eight of Europe’s biggest clubs want to sign him up.
The website seem to think Manchester United head up the list of teams keen to land Belotti.
But they say fellow giants Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris St-Germain, Bayern Munich and Roma are after him too.
Any side wishing to secure Belotti’s services will be forced to splash some serious cash though.
The Serie A goal machine put pen to paper on fresh terms at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino earlier this term.
And that new agreement, which tied him down until 2021, included an eye-watering £84m buyout clause.

Uncertainty at Arsenal increases as doubts grow over future of 'transfer fixer' Dick Law

The uncertainty surrounding Arsenal has thrown up a new question mark over the long-term future of Arsene Wenger’s trusted transfer negotiator, Dick Law.
Sources have told Telegraph Sport that there are doubts over whether or not Law will stay at Arsenal beyond this season, despite a denial from the club on Friday evening.
Law has recently been in America, but is still working as normal alongside Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport last week, Arsenal chiefs are growing increasingly anxious that Wenger will leave at the end of the season when his current contract expires which, in itself, has created a feeling of uncertainty around the Emirates.
Having originally scouted for Arsenal in South America and helped take Gilberto Silva and Carlos Vela to the club, Law took up his current role as chief transfer negotiator based out of England eight years ago, following the departure of David Dein two years earlier in 2007.
Although he has never been given the title, Law operates much like a director of football for Arsenal in helping to clinch deals and negotiating with clubs, players and agents. One of his biggest successes has been the £42 million record signing of Mesut Ozil in the final days of the 2013 transfer window in which he managed to keep negotiations secret from Arsenal’s rivals.

Law was talking to Ozil’s father and then agent Mustafa in Germany while Gazidis brokered the deal with Real Madrid in Spain.
Arsenal would need to replace Law if he did leave and could appoint their first official director of football or could instead opt for somebody in a head of recruitment role.
Other than sweating over whether or not Wenger will leave, and having to deal with questions over claims that Law could go, Arsenal are yet to agree new contracts with either Ozil or Alexis Sanchez.

In a bizarre twist, thousands of Chilean football fans are planning a march to try to convince Sanchez to leave Arsenal after an event was organised on Facebook. More than 6,000 people have said they will attend a civilised walk through Chile’s capital Santiago on March 1.
The description of the event reads: “Chileans are tired of watching one of our stars work alone so that their team can move forward.
“We do not want him to play in Madrid, not to return to Barcelona, the truth is that we do not give a damn what team to play, we just want to see him fight along with 10 others to get results. No more alone.”

Arsenal squad: who should stay and who should go?
With Arsene Wenger expected to leave the club at the end of the season, the Frenchman's exit could spark a massive overhaul of the current squad. Who deserves a second chance and who needs to leave with Arsene Wenger? Swipe RIGHT for yes and LEFT for no.

Manchester United star Juan Mata partly ‘influenced’ Mark Clattenburg Premier League departure

Manchester United star Juan Mata played a part in Mark Clattenburg’s controversial decision to leave the Premier League, according to former referees’ chief Keith Hackett.

Clattenburg has long been regarded as one of Europe’s top officials, highlighted by the fact he took charge of last season’s Champions League final as well as Portugal’s defeat of France in the final of Euro 2016.
The 41-year-old turned his back on the Premier League this week, however, and confirmed he was due to take up lucrative position as head of referees in Western Asia.

But Hackett believes an incident which occurred back in 2012 played a part in Clattenburg’s thinking. The referee was accused of calling Mata, then a Chelsea player, a ‘Spanish t***’ and of making a racist comment towards John Obi Mikel during a heated Premier League clash, during which he sent off two players.
The west London club ultimately dropped their complaints, and while the Football Association found no evidence to suggest Clattenburg was guilty of any wrongdoing, Hackett believes the lack of support he receivedin the immediate aftermath of the controversy has long played on his mind.
‘It’s bad news for English refereeing. The Premier League has lost the world’s best ref – it’s a massive blow,’ he told the Daily Star.

‘I think it’s down to poor management. There were incidents when the PGMOL haven’t supported or clarified decisions when they’ve needed to.
‘Mark felt after the Mata incident no-one supported him. He was left high and dry.’

Kevin Gameiro's five-minute hat trick gives Atletico win at Sporting

Substitute Kevin Gameiro scored a five-minute hat trick to give Atletico Madrid a 4-1 win at Sporting Gijon.
After a quiet first half, Atletico went ahead just seconds after the restart when Yannick Carrasco latched on to a flick-on and managed to get enough power on his shot to beat Sporting keeper Ivan Cuellar.
The lead did not last long, though, as Sergio Alvarez fired home on 49 minutes, with defender Stefan Savic unable to block the ball on the line.
Atletico initially struggled to muster a response and brought Gameiro on as a substitute for the ineffective Fernando Torres just after the hour mark.
They might have re-established their lead in the 75th minute when Antoine Griezmann was denied by a marginal offside call, but they were ahead five minutes later when the France international's neat assist allowed Gameiro to go through.
Gameiro added his second barely a minute later, sending the ball across Cuellar and into the far corner after Thomas had intercepted a sloppy defensive pass, and the former Sevilla striker added his third from a similar angle on 85 minutes.
The hat trick was the fastest in La Liga since David Villa's for Valencia in 2006.
Victory ensures Atletico will finish the weekend in fourth place.

Barcelona's Luis Enrique: PSG loss won't affect decision on my future

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said the 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday will have no impact on whether he decides to remain at the club beyond the summer.
Barca will look to pick themselves up on Sunday against La Liga strugglers Leganes following the demolition at the Parc des Princes, which left them on the brink of an exit from the Champions League at the round of 16 for the first time in a decade.
Their response to the resounding beating by Unai Emery's side will determine whether or not they can catch league leaders Real Madrid, although Luis Enrique said it would not alter his decision about whether to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season, while adding he does not know if he will stay or go.
"What happens in these months will have nothing to do with my decision, not one game, not two or the 38 games in the league. I still haven't taken it," he told a news conference ahead of the game with Leganes.
Luis Enrique said he was unaffected by the criticism that has come his way after the heavy defeat to PSG.
"I have nothing to say about it, I feel for anyone who thinks I'd be affected by it. Criticism has zero effect on me, if it was any other way I couldn't be in this job for almost three years," he said.
"We are our own fiercest critics, the ones who most want to improve. The rest is just a circus, but fortunately there's a considerable distance between us and you [the media].
"I never listen to the media and I'm not going to start this week. I don't go within 10 metres of a television or a radio -- not even when I'm drunk."

Luis Enrique said the game with Leganes, who are 17th in La Liga and fighting to avoid relegation, gave his side the chance to put their troubling week behind them.
He added that Barca would not become obsessed by the return game against PSG on March 8, where they will need to make Champions League history by becoming the first side to overturn a four-goal deficit from a first leg.
"It's a different game for us after what happened on Tuesday, a good game to see the team's response from a difficult situation," he said.
"We've got a month left until the second leg. It's obviously something important in my head but it would be absurd to only think about that game. We have four games before then and now's the time to think about tomorrow's game. There'll be plenty of time to speak about PSG."

Fury FC adding Thomas Meilleur-Giguère and Aron Mkungilwa to roster

Ottawa Fury FC added to its roster Friday with the signings of defenders Thomas Meilleur-Giguère and Aron Mkungilwa, both designated for the United Soccer League club by the Montreal Impact of Major League Soccer.
Those moves, which still require USL and federation approval, would bring the Fury FC roster up to 21 players, with two remaining spots to be filled.
Meilleur-Giguère, a six-foot 19-year-old from Repentigny, Que., led the Impact under-18 academy squad to first place in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy league in 2014-15 before making his professional debut in USL with FC Montreal in 2016. He also played with Canada’s under-18 national team in 2014-15 and was nominated for the Canadian under-20 player of the year award last year.
He is with the national squad participating in the CONCACAF men’s under-20 championship at San José, Costa Rica, until March 5.
“He will add depth to our centre back position and we hope he continues his development with us,” Paul Dalglish, Fury FC’s head coach and general manager, said in a media release.
Mkungilwa, 5-4 and 20 years old, played 28 USL games with FC Montreal over the past two years. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he made one appearance for Canada’s squad in the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship.
“He’s going to come in and compete for minutes in our squad, as well as adding depth,” Dalglish added. “I’m very happy because we are bringing in two real-high quality players at the early part of their career.”
After commencing preseason game action with Friday night’s matchup against the Ottawa Internationals senior men’s squad, Fury FC will head south on Sunday for a weeklong camp and contests against Saint Louis FC (Feb. 21), OKC Energy (Feb. 23) and FC Cincinnati (Feb. 25) at Bradenton, Fla.

Following three previous seasons in the North American Soccer League, Fury FC will kick off its first USL regular season away against Saint Louis FC on April 1. The home opener against Toronto FC II is scheduled for April 22.
Updated Fury FC roster
Goalkeepers: Callum Irving; Andrew MacRae; David Paulmin.
Defenders: Andrae Campbell; Eddie Edward; Ramon Martin Del Campo; Shane McEleney; Thomas Meilleur-Giguère; Aron Mkungilwa; Onua Obasi; Kyle Venter.

Chukwu rallies support for Rangers, as team battles Algeria’s J.S Saoura

New General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of Enugu Rangers Football Club, Mr. Christian Chukwu, has solicited the cooperation and support of all stakeholders as the team confronts Algeria’s J.S Saoura in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round in the ‘Coal City’ tomorrow.
Enugu Rangers held the Algerian side to a 1-1 draw in the first leg and need only a scoreless draw to qualify for the last qualifying round.
Speaking at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Thursday evening, the former Super Eagles’ coach told journalists that no club across the globe could succeed without the media.
He added: “For me to really succeed in this onerous task of taking Rangers FC to greater heights, I need your unflinching support and co-operation. The essence of this parley is for me to familiarize with you, the sports journalists, in Enugu State, as well rub minds on the way forward for our darling team, Rangers.”

Enugu Rangers won the 2015/2016 NPFL title for the first time in 32 years last season.
Chukwu promised not to fail the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who found him worthy to steer the ship of the club, adding
that he would not rest until Rangers returned to what it used to be in
the 70s and 80s.
The Rangers boss hinted
that the players were in high spirit ahead of tomorrow’s return leg match with the J.S Saoura of Algeria in Enugu.
He added that the players had been duly motivated and were set to do the state and Nigeria proud and called on Rangers’ fans across the country to turn out en mass to cheer the club to victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo pokes fun at ex-Real Madrid teammate - then instantly regrets it when he spots a TV camera

The Real Madrid star's face says it all when he notices the camera and realises everything has been recorded

Cristiano Ronaldo is known for being a bit of a character.
He's often poking fun at his teammates on the training ground and apparently at his former teammates too, as the above video shows.
The clip captures the Real Madrid star in the tunnel ahead of their recent La Liga game with Espanyol, which they won 2-0.
He spots former Los Blancos shot-stopper Diego Lopez - who now stands between the sticks for the Calatan side - and goes to say hello.

Now it's not clear exactly what the Portuguese says, but according to a number of reports from Spain, the forward decides to crack a little joke... at Lopez's hairline.
"Wow, Diego, you've had like 3600 hairs put in," is what he apparently says to the keeper, before giggling with him and pulling him in for a hug.

But it's the cameraman who has the last laugh.
Pleased with his joke, CR7 goes to smirk and then spots the lens glaring at him.
His reaction is brilliant and he appears to instantly regret what he has just said as he holds his face in his hands.
Oh, Ronnie!

Big-money signing Krychowiak asks to play with PSG reserves

The Poland international midfielder will play with the second string in the French capital this weekend as he continues to struggle to find his feet
Grzegorz Krychowiak will not be part of Paris Saint-Germain's matchday squad for this weekend's Ligue 1 clash with Toulouse as he will play with the reserves instead at his own request.
The Poland midfielder joined PSG from Sevilla during the close-season, but has been struggling to live up to the high expectations at the Parc des Princes.
Trezeguet: Cavani is exceptional
He has made just 16 appearances in all competitions for the French champions and has not featured in Ligue 1 since December 2016.
"I speak with all my players, so also with Krychowiak," Unai Emery said at a news conference.
"He has a lot of competition in his position at the moment. Adrien Rabiot plays in his position now that Thiago Motta is not there. It is a very difficult position.
Juve: Signing Verratti unrealistic
"Krychowiak will not be part of the squad for Sunday's game, but he will be with the reserves. It is a matter of competition. He has asked to play with the reserves.
"He can still play with the first team in the upcoming weeks. He has to make sure he is ready and that is why he will play with the reserves now to gain match rhythm."
PSG will be without Thiago Silva and Angel Di Maria for Sunday's game due to injury, with the Argentine picking up a muscular problem in his side's 4-0 Champions League win over Barcelona on Tuesday.

New arrival Goncalo Guedes, meanwhile, will be part of the matchday squad, but Emery has made it clear the winger is unlikely to start and will have to be patient.
Dani Alves: PSG? Barca can do it
"Goncalo is a young player and he will have to be patient," Emery continued.
"He has been training really well and is showing a lot of desire. He has to prepare in order to be ready each time he gets some playing time.
"He will be part of the squad. I am very happy with him. Expectations at PSG are even higher than at Benfica. He has to keep making progress."

Manchester City targeting defender Benjamin Mendy of Monaco - sources

Manchester City are eyeing a move for Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy, sources close to the Ligue 1 club have told ESPN FC.
City boss Pep Guardiola has made a new left-back one of his top priorities this summer as he looks to reshape his squad and improve his defence at the Etihad Stadium.
Left-back has been a problematic position for City this season and first-choice left-back Gael Clichy is out of contract in the summer and unlikely to be offered a new deal.
Aleksandar Kolarov has been switched from a left-back to central defence this term and that has left City short of options at full-back.
City have been looking at a number of possible left-backs, and sources close to Monaco said City scouts have been making regular checks on Mendy.
Mendy only joined Monaco from Ligue 1 rivals Marseille last summer, signing a five-year deal with the principality outfit.

The attacking full-back has impressed for Monaco in Ligue 1 and the Champions League this season, providing seven assists in 23 appearances for the club.
City will see Mendy at close quarters when they take on Monaco in the Champions League next week and if the France Under-21 international impresses in the two meetings with City, the Premier League side could step up their interest in the 22-year-old.
